Cisco Secure Desktop is a legacy endpoint posture and session-protection technology from Cisco Systems, Inc. It was designed to work with Cisco ASA SSL VPNs to verify the security state of a connecting device and to safeguard sensitive data during and after remote-access sessions. Before granting access, it could assess factors such as operating system status, antivirus and antispyware presence, and personal firewall configuration, enabling dynamic, policy-based access control. For users on shared or unmanaged computers, it provided an encrypted, temporary workspace to contain downloads and web artifacts and automatically clean up at logout, helping reduce the risk of data leakage. Additional features included cache cleaning and other measures intended to protect information on public PCs.
Cisco Secure Desktop has reached end-of-life. For current deployments, Cisco recommends migrating to Cisco Secure Client (formerly AnyConnect) with ISE Posture or HostScan for modern posture assessment and policy enforcement on Cisco Secure Firewall ASA and related platforms.
Platform note: The secure workspace capabilities were primarily available on Windows, while host posture checks were supported on Windows and, in some versions, macOS and Linux.
